    Art Techniques and Tips

Hi!  I am hoping this blog can be a place for artists of all mediums to exchange ideas, talk about their art, and help eachother with any tips you may have.

My first tip is for pastels.  Don't throw away your little nibs of pastels.  Organize them by color then grind them to a powder with a mortar and pestle.  Add a little rubbing alcohol to make a paste and reform into a pastel shape with your hands. (It would be a good idea to wear rubber gloves here!)  Once the alcohol evpaorates it's ready to use!

I hope we can get a lot more great information from all of you creative people out there!

Just wanted to add that the picture the artist did using the oil and turpenoid technique on pastel paper is the mountain lion in the Winter Festival photos.

Isopropyle is the same as rubbing alcohol.  It's water based and probably won't work well with oils but you could use it as a solvent and brush it over your pastels or just use water.

One of our local artists used an interesting oil technique.  She thinned out her oil paints with Turpenoid and painted on pastel paper.  The result was a pastel look.  I asked her how she did it.  She replied " Lots of turp and very thin layers with a delicate touch".  Might be something fun to try!

coincidence--i was just pondering a big bottle of isopropyle alcohol this afternoon & wondering how I could use it as a medium with oil & soft pastels BUT I dont think that is the same as "rubbibg" alcohol--does anyone know? Or what else to do with it? thanx
